The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body operating under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives. Established by the UNBS Act Cap 210, UNBS began its operations in 1989. The organization is governed by the National Standards Council and is led by an Executive Director responsible for daily operations.
Mandate
UNBS's primary mandate includes:
- Formulation and Promotion of Standards: Developing and encouraging the use of quality standards.
- Enforcing Public Health and Safety Standards: Protecting public health, safety, and the environment from harmful and sub-standard products.
- Ensuring Fair Trade and Precision in Industry: Providing reliable measurement systems to maintain fairness in trade.
- Strengthening Uganda’s Economy: Enhancing the quality of locally manufactured products to improve their competitiveness in regional and international markets.
